The human body is composed of many different types of cells. Cells are composed of many different types of molecules. Molecules consist of one or more atoms of one or more elements joined by chemical bonds.
Similarly think of any system of government consisting of different types of people different from their ethnicity, beliefs, class and status. Think of families as molecules of members serving in place of atoms.

Atoms consist of a nucleus, neutrons, protons and electrons.
So would each member come with his or her own viewpoint and attitude. Some members hold within a family a conventional belief adhering to the values of the Establishment as much as protons are positively charged particles. Corollary to this there must be those who hold a bohemian, free thinking attitude: electrons are negatively charged particles. No matter what may characterize any atom, its primary goal is to reach a state of maximum stability. So would family offer for all members to reach some position in life and be counted as responsible citizens.

Nation building is out of such communities, of families where each would try to contribute in so many ways for the peace and harmony of the whole. But the viewpoints of individuals or electrons do not change. In furthering your chances bonding with pressure groups and powerful lobbies that guide Washington for an example, you are setting the stage for some to be left out. Those who are left out behave very much like unpaired electron, giving rise to mischief.

Free radicals are very unstable and react quickly with other compounds, trying to capture the needed electron to gain stability. Generally, free radicals attack the nearest stable molecule, "stealing" its electron. When the "attacked" molecule loses its electron, it becomes a free radical itself, beginning a chain reaction. Once the process is started, it can cascade, finally resulting in the disruption of a living cell.
If in raising a family of responsible citizens did we go wrong? You can ask this to yourself and try to find an answer. It is more germane to the present unsatisfactory state of things than saying some platitudes of ‘manifest destiny’ as if learnt by rote.
