Athens on the left

Iadmon whose sole fame now rests as the master of Aesop, in his youth landed in the mainland of Greece, having heard that Athens was the city of opportunities. He came at last to the city gates of Athens and asked for the free- man’s rights to live in the city and do business. The Council wanted to know the nature of business and he said that he was looking for a business, anything that brought him quick returns.
“What is it you want in life?” “ Money, lots of it!” Iadmon replied without batting an eyelid.
He was directed to Athens on the Left.
Having made lot of money as a trader in essential goods Iadmon the Athenian tried to be known for a man of culture. He went to the same Council which now threw him out saying: “Why must a Boeotian need culture?” When he remonstrated that he was an Athenian like them they laughed hard.
That evening Iadmon told his wife that they were not ‘Athenians’ in any real sense. “For that matter we are not in Athens.” added Iadmon.
”But the city is known as Athens!”, said his wife incredulous at first.“Athens in name, but on the wrong side.”
