A Fable
A Wind of Change ©
Zeus one night dreamt of something that made him feel so buoyant and he got up from his couch humming a tune. His wine bearer was struck by its melody and praised it as the most beautiful music he ever heard. Aeolus the wind god who was ever looking for a way to please the Chief God immediately took it up. He made it into a Hymn Unto Zeus. Forthwith he went spreading good cheer. Clouds sped across the sky as the sea broke into thousands of waves, all boistrous since they had not heard anything like it before. Aeolus had made the earth joyous except for a giant cypress tree at the Mount around the Snowy River. “ Sorry old Tree! You have had your day. Now let yourself go.” It stood in his way. He just butted it and it came crashing in a thunderous din.
The wind god returned to Mount Olympus satisfied that he taught the earth to sing a Hymn that was synonymous with joy.
He found the gods were seated around a funeral pyre; and they were singing the Hymn unto Zeus. Aeolus leant across Ganymede to ask,
“ Who is dead? Why such mournful music? ”
Ganymede replied,” Some miscreant destroyed the tree most favored by Zeus.” Sad indeed.
“A tree?”
“ Yes a cypress tree, At the Mount around the Snowy River.”
